Requirement for application
- Applicants must have Skills in making diagnosis, selecting and providing appropriate treatment for medical or surgical emergencies (life or death or severe injury), as indicated until emergency assistance arrives
- Applicants must have ability to assess a patient’s condition and to initiate appropriate treatment
- Must have knowledge of pharmaceuticals to treat disease and illnesses, to include a knowledge of the mechanism of action, side effects, toxic nature, and drug interactions of medications
- Ability to perform and interpret diagnostic tests in order to determine therapeutic treatment plans
- Ability to deal effectively with patients
Educational Requirement
Applicants must Graduate from a professional school of nursing approved by the official accreditation body for the state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. Territory for the year of your graduation. Acceptable nursing programs include bachelors of Science or higher degree programs in nursing, diploma programs in nursing and associate degree programs in nursing.
Professional Registration
All applicants must have an active, current registration as a professional nurse in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Exceptions may be made for applicants who have graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months, pending state registration as a professional nurse within six months of appointment.
For consideration at the GS-09 level one of the following:
- Masters Degree (or equivalent)
- 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education in nursing
- 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in Federal service
Note: Combinations of successfully-completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet the requirement of 1 year of specialized experience.
For consideration at the GS-11 level one of the following:
- Doctoral Degree (Ph.D. or equivalent)
- 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education in nursing
- 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in Federal service
Note: Combinations of successfully-completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet the requirement of 1 year of specialized experience.
